The Ph.D. programme in Economics is a five-year degree programme. The first two years of the programme are typically spent by students pursuing coursework with the remaining three years working on a dissertation on a topic of their choice. The coursework involves taking core courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics sequence during the first year of the programme. This is to ensure that students have an adequate and rigorous exposure to the core concepts in economics before they embark on working on their dissertation. The second year courses will typically involve taking advanced courses that are closer to one’s intended area of specialization so that students are made aware of the existing literature and the frontiers of research in their chosen field of specialization. The remaining three years will be spent working intensively on a dissertation under the supervision of at least three faculty members, one of whom will serve as the dissertation committee chair. The dissertation will usually consist of three chapters on interrelated or distinct research questions. The dissertation is expected to be thorough, methodologically rigorous and demonstrates significant, original contribution to the literature in one’s area of specialization. Following successful oral defense of the dissertation in front of the faculty and peers, the candidate will be granted Ph.D. degree in economics. At the end of the Ph.D. programme in Economics, candidates can expect to be critical thinkers, possess the skills to execute the latest research methodologies in their field of specialization and have a successful career in academia as well as research think-tanks.
