Punita G. Singh

Punita Singh has studied sound and communication from multiple perspectives. She has a bachelor’s degree in physics from St Stephens College, Delhi University, India, an interdisciplinary master’s degree in psychoacoustics and a doctorate in communication science from Washington University, St Louis, USA. She was a post-doctoral fellow at the Auditory Cognition Laboratory and Department of Psychology and Neuropsychology and lecturer in the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She has taught courses on music perception, audio engineering, phonetics, speech, hearing, language and communication at the undergraduate and graduate level. She has also worked on alternative teaching models for educating the underprivileged in multi-age, low-tech, informal group settings and trained trainers on effective communication.

Punita currently looks after client communication for an international consulting company. She has also worked in the publishing industry, serving as Managing Editor for Education and Digital Media at Dorling Kindersley and Head of Rough Guides in India. She has published scientific papers on auditory perception and articles on language in the popular press.

Punita is a ‘Distinguished Toastmaster’ and regularly presents public talks on music and participates in spoken word performances. She is familiar with diverse genres of music, including Hindustani, western classical, Afro-Cuban, flamenco, rock, jazz and electroacoustic. A trained percussionist, Punita plays the tabla, congas and drum kit and has provided soundtracks for some art films and installations.
