The Department of Physics at Ashoka University invites applications for its Ph.D. program, starting in the spring semester (January) 2021. Currently, we invite applications only in experimental soft-condensed matter physics. The Department’s work in this area is described in more detail in the faculty profiles listed below.
Ashoka University is a private, nonprofit university, modelled after the best universities in the world. It provides a multidisciplinary, liberal education that emphasizes both world-class teaching and cutting-edge research, straddles boundaries between the arts and sciences and encourages interactions across disciplines. Its faculty and students come from India and abroad.
Candidates must have a master degree in Physics. A minimum of 55% marks in aggregate (or equivalent in any point system), both at the bachelor’s and master’s level, is required.
Applicants should complete the online application form. They are required to supply a brief statement of research interests (maximum 1 page) and two letters of recommendation. Research experience at the undergraduate or master’s-level, project work or internships should be highlighted. Candidates interested in experimental physics should describe relevant experience and interests. Recommendation letters should be emailed, with the candidate’s name in the subject line, to physics.phd@ashoka.edu.in.
Candidates are typically expected to have qualified, at a level to be decided by Ashoka University, in one of the following national examinations: JEST, CSIR-UGC NET, and GATE. In exceptional circumstances, candidates who have not qualified in these examinations but with skills relevant to research, e.g. in experimental work, may be given an internal entrance examination. International candidates may also appear for this examination. All those shortlisted will be invited to an interview at the Ashoka University campus, Sonepat. The tentative examination/interview date is in the second/third week of January 2021.
A fixed number of attractive Ph.D. fellowships will be offered according to Ashoka University’s rules. The fellowship includes a monthly stipend of INR 35,000 and an annual contingency grant of INR 20,000. Students will either be given on-campus accommodation or a rent allowance of INR 7000 per month.
