Shruti Rao

Age: 22 Hometown: Varanasi

B.Com. (Honours) Finance Faculty of Commerce, Banaras Hindu University.

Shruti B Rao was born and brought up in the city of Varanasi. By the age of 14 she was addicted to classical literature and ensured she watched one great movie every week, therefore has an excellent taste in books, movies, music and people.
She has been the district topper in both class 10th and 12th. When she was interviewed by a local journalist after her 10th class results, she shocked everyone by saying that she wants to be a “Travel writer” and her inspiration was “Eminem”.
A keen observer of life and a true-blue romantic at heart, Shruti is a natural story teller. She has been the chief editor of her school magazine and content writer for the centenary year website of Banaras Hindu University.
She has also worked with freed child labourers in the carpet manufacturing belt of Eastern UP(Project Mala), slum dwellers from the slums of Indore (Universal Solidarity Movement) and also once ran away from home to work for an organisation in the rural hinterlands of Bihar(Project Potential). She has been a yatri-2015, Jagriti Yatra and was awarded full scholarship by Coca-cola under their 5by20 initiative. She dreams of becoming a social entrepreneur and work in the field of sanitisation and hygiene for rural women and girls.
Shruti holds a B. Com degree and a diploma in French from Banaras Hindu University.
She took up CA and shifted to Bangalore to work as an intern with a Big 4. For the longest time, she was caught in the endless loop of clearing exams. She hopes that YIF will give her an opportunity to study for the sake of learning and will help her build a life that she is proud of.
Favourite Quote: “For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.”
