Sustainable Development (SD) is the universal essentiality of present times and universities have a critical role in implementing this initiative through their functioning, policies and practices. To integrate SD goals, #universities should have a global outlook that is still locally rooted in its strategies. In the last decade, various theories and recommendations have been proposed and adopted globally for integrating sustainability in higher education systems. In India, environmental education has been mandated at all formal levels in the education system. Still, there is a strong argument that it is not simply a matter of overhauling syllabi and curricula. Instead, universities should be incorporating SD goals into their #research and their own operations.

Anirban Chakraborty, Director, Research and Development; Sumit Kumar, previously with the Science Policy Initiative; L. S. Shashidhara, Dean of Research and Professor of Biology; and Anjali Taneja, Associate Director, Science Policy Initiative write on "Building Sustainable Societies through Purpose‐Driven Universities: A Case Study from Ashoka University (India)".

The study aims to investigate the sustainability model of Ashoka University that approaches its commitment through sustainability‐focused courses, research, and operations. This study involves an in‐depth literature review and uses an established framework to assess the condition of the university towards sustainability issues.

Lieutenant Colonel Ashutosh Singh - Head of Procurement and Security at Ashoka gives us insight into the security on Ashoka's campus.

“At Ashoka, we endeavor to provide 'smart security to a smart generation'. Other than a well-fortified perimeter fence, the complete campus is equipped with CCTV cameras and intercoms. The routes of ingress and egress to the campus, as well as important interior locations, are controlled by smart cards through sophisticated access control systems. There are PA systems installed at critical locations.

A battery of highly motivated male and female security guards equipped with radio-sets keep the students, staff, and assets of the campus under discrete surveillance 24x7x365 besides a 'Quick Reaction Team' for emergency response. The security at Ashoka is absolutely unobtrusive and not at all overbearing. Our priority is your privacy and we work hard to let you enjoy the joy of safety! Our guards are 'always near to hear you'. Not surprisingly, the security booths at our gates act as One-stop information and quick assistance hubs. We have excellent liaison with Police, village heads, and government administration that comes in handy all the time.

We firmly believe that 'your security is our pride'. "

Saransh Ahuja (@paajirao): A student belonging to the UG batch of 2021 shares his experiences with the security on Ashoka's campus.

“In my experience, the security staff at Ashoka has been extremely competent and alert, the guards always making the students’ safety their topmost priority. The guards’ warm, caring nature and the connection that I have established with a lot of them since my first day on campus has enhanced my belongingness to the place.
I have never seen such a security team before, which, in addition to being responsible and vigilant, complements the culture of a place so well. In a liberal setting that Ashoka provides, the security staff and all the ancillary staff members fit very well within the boundaries of this campus and contribute to the various aspects of safety which are necessary on any university campus."

Ashoka University’s campus is 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 to a diverse range of academic and non-academic facilities. Sometimes, however, this sheer number of choices of activities can become overwhelming and too much to handle. On those days, one needs a quiet corner to kick back and relax.

Anushka Bidani, an undergraduate student of English & Creative Writing and an intern with the Office of Communications & PR at Ashoka lists ten of the best places on #campus to unwind after a hectic day in the life of an Ashoka student.

Shreya Singh (@shreya._.singh10): A student belonging to the UG batch of 2021 shares her experiences with the security on Ashoka's campus.

“Having lived on campus for over 2 years I have formed cordial relationships with many didis and bhaiyas who work as part of the security team at Ashoka. Out of the various security measures on campus, this has been one of the most significant for me. Our safety is their utmost priority, treating us as their extended family to the extent that many of them know us on a first-name basis. The knowledge that they are present in every building on campus and at the gate not only ensures our security and also adds a sense of calm and a feeling of being at home."

Prof. Bittu (He/Him) (@bittu_k_r) - Professor of Biology and Psychology shares his experience at Ashoka as part of the LGBTQ+ community.

“As one of the two or three out trans professors in India, I hope that my presence and that of the trans policy committee that I chair, and the measures Ashoka University has taken to make me feel safe and respected, are reassuring to potential incoming trans students. These include safe gender affirming space access, gender affirming housing and gender neutral bathrooms, chosen name use in academic settings, transition information, and a developing policy against discrimination”.

A tale of Ashoka’s successful placement amidst the pandemic

Priyanka Chandhok, Assistant Vice President, Career Development Office, @ashokauniv writes about Career Development Office placing Ashoka students with their dream companies successfully amidst the pandemic.

An excerpt from the piece:
Life since March 2020 hasn’t been the same for any of us, of course, but in many ways, my team managed to transition to working from home exceptionally well. Of course, there were roadblocks and difficulties, but there was also always a solution looming large at the horizon and we knew, as a team, we would make it through.

Perhaps because we managed to nurture these interpersonal dynamics, we could pull off a year of successful placements, considering how the market had been impacted. Last year, we placed students across 100+ organisations, along with working on constantly rethinking our outreach and engagement strategies with a more COVID-sensitive focus.

For the 2021 graduating batch almost 300 students have been placed in over 100 organisations including A.T Kearney, Accenture, Airtel Payments Bank, Arthur D. Little, BCG, Deloitte USI,  Deutsche Bank CIB, EY, Fractal Analytics, Gartner, Genpact, Google, Grant Thornton, IIFL, Infoedge, Kotak Investment Banking, KPMG, Redseer Consulting, McKinsey, WNS and Zomato. In addition, several others are being evaluated by organisations.

So while our jobs may have their ups and downs, at the end of the day, the joy of connecting Ashoka students with their dream companies and roles makes all of that worthwhile.

A student belonging to the LGBTQ+ community at Ashoka anonymously shares their experiences at university.

“Coming to Ashoka I got a space to breathe freely, not be afraid, to speak up and be myself. Be it experimenting in our day-to-day lives or just being open about discussions on sexuality and gender. I knew I was queer long before I came to Ashoka, yet this space gave me the chance to truly explore what that meant. At first, despite the assurances and comfort provided by people around me, I was afraid to express myself. There was a constant fear of being outed. I existed in a weird limbo of being out of the closet and yet not. Despite that, when within the walls of those red Ashokan bricks or the virtual classrooms filled with bright minds, I have found that fear to be quite futile. If there is one thing that Ashoka has taught me, it is that nothing is linear, and your identity - the least of it. I had many labels to describe myself when I first entered college, and today who I am is vastly different. Ashoka gave me that space, to explore myself, to learn things about myself that were otherwise hidden. I am queer, I know it and that is all that matters.”

Cyain (Anubhab) (They/Them)
- A member of The Ashoka University Queer Collective (AUQC) shares their experience at Ashoka as a part of the LGBTQ+ community.

“As an incoming student, I did feel hyped seeing queer kids having open conversations on university chat groups. Also, I can't deny that Professor Bittu's presence at Ashoka played a large role in my choice to come to the university. Before I began my journey at Ashoka, I was scared since, in the past, I’d had some not-so-nice experiences due to my queerness. On coming to this university, however, I found a nice and accepting family of students and faculty. I went on adventures with them by my side and had conversations with them which made me comfortable with my identity as queer and eventually as a genderqueer person. Of course, it wasn't easy initially and I was admittedly scared that I lacked any political nuance and that I would take up space based on the other intersectional privileges I had. These fears evaporated because I was lucky to find super nice and helpful friends who took the chance to educate, and stand by me while I learned and unlearned.”

"I am honored to receive the Bharadwaj-Wolf 2019-20 prize from the Journal of Peasant Studies. I am indebted to the farmers and marketing agents in Nashik, whose generosity allowed me to undertake this research. Let me also use this opportunity to note that the late Professor Krishna Bharadwaj's daughter, Sudha Bharadwaj, the committed trade unionist, lawyer, and human rights activist, is in prison for over 1000 days.
